For Canadian and U.S. citizens must have a valid passport for travel to the Dominican Republic. All tourists must purchase a visa/tourist card at a cost of $10.00 U.S. to enter the Dominican Republic. Canadian travellers are provided with this visa/tourist card before leaving Canada. Visitors who do not obtain a visa/tourist card prior to entry must purchase one at the airport when they arrive in the Dominican Republic.
There is a departure tax of $20.00 U.S. per person. Canadian or other foreign currencies are not accepted for the departure tax. Some airlines include this tax in your ticket price so check with your airlines.
Generally, the temperatures are hot during the day. Many of the days are a mixture of sun and clouds, the clouds being a welcome relief from the hot sun. January is the coldest month, and August is the hottest month of the year . There is no real rainy season in the Dominican Republic how ever some say it rains more often in November and December than other months, it can rain at any time during the year as is such anywhere. Much of the time the rain occurs overnight or as a brief afternoon shower.
Due to the Dominican Republic’s warm, tropical climate, not a lot if you’re visiting one of the coastal destinations! Lightweight material shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, bathing suits and sandals are the standard – certainly for during the day. Light pants and jackets are recommended for the evenings, or if you’ll be visiting the mountains, especially in the winter months where the temperatures can cool down at night. As the norm for vacation destinations, people tend to dress a little less casually to go out for dinner or to bars, clubs or casinos. Higher end resorts, restaurants and bars, may have a dress code with more specific requirements. Dominicans tend to dress more formally than North Americans. If you are spending time in a larger city, it is recommended to have a nice set of clothing for going out in the evening. A light rain jacket (and/or umbrella) is useful to have in the event of rain showers. If you plan to participate in sporting or adventure activities, such as tennis or horseback riding, a pair of runners/sneakers will definitely be useful to have.
The following items are ‘recommended’ to bring from home. In the event you forget certain items, most Dominican Republic tourism destinations will probably sell most of what you might need, but items may/many not be priced higher than if they were purchased in your home country.
Clothing Bathing/swim suit(s) Shorts Tank tops & T-shirts Hat(s) for sun protection Long pants (for cooler weather and/or protection from mosquitoes) Light jacket, sweater or sweatshirt (for cooler weather) Light rain jacket and/or umbrella.
Shoes Comfortable & breathable shoes for walking around Sandals/flip-flops to wear on the beach Dress shoes for evenings out Runners/trainers for sports activities.
Toiletries Soap, shampoo & conditioner Toothpaste & toothbrush Waterproof sunscreen/sun block with a high sun protection factor (SPF) SPF lip protection Moisturizer First aid supplies: pain reliever, upset stomach medicine, Band-aids, etc. Any prescription medicines you may need Mosquito/bug repellent Razor/shaving kit Nail clippers/nail file Comb/brush Small hand mirror Towel Extra contact lenses & lens solution (if applicable)
Other Pack a carry-on bag with your necessary items in case your luggage is delayed or lost Passport/Identification (and photocopy of each kept a separate place) Driver’s license (and photocopy) if you plan on renting a vehicle Money/Traveler’s Checks Travel medical insurance . Camera & rolls of film 110 Volts to 220 Volts adaptor (The Dominican Republic has has a 110 Volts / 60 Hertz system. Visitors from Europe who need to use their electronic equipment such as a battery charger should bring their voltage adaptor) Sunglasses Earplugs (if you are a light sleeper) Spanish-English (or your language) dictionary.
Officially There is a 16% sales tax (ITBIS) businesses charge for the sale of their products and/or services. By law, particular establishments, for example hotels and restaurants, are also able to add a 10% service charge. Some businesses include this tax and any service charges in their prices, but some do not, so it would be wise to ask before making your purchase. Many times even if there is a 10% service charge added to your bill, this amount is not provided to the staff that provided you the service. If you feel the service you received deserves extra recognition, it will certainly be appreciated as hourly wages are quite low. The average is about 10% of the total cost of the service for restaurants. For baggage handlers at airports, taxi drivers, hotel cleaning staff, etc., use your own discretion based on the service they provide you. Unofficially most small vendors don’t charge tax when you pay in cash so it is advisable to bring plenty of small denomination 1 and 5 dollar bills.
